Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and I am really excited to learn a lot. I recently picked up a used computer for free, but I have to install a new operating system. We won't be using it for much but watching movies. I was wondering if Windows XP will operate under these specs.

Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 B28
Chipset: AMD 785G
Memory: 4gb Dimm (2x2gb)
HDD: 500gv SATA

Thanks for your help and have a great day!

put ubuntu on it. ( it's free ) the machine isn't worth much.............. buying windows 7 doesn't make sense. you'll have a nightmare finding updates for xp. microsoft doesn't update it anymore. ( service packs are there though ) but you need to google it.

Yea, I agree with Swifty. I wouldn't want to use a OS that isn't properly supported. It could be a security nightmare.

Yes it will.
But why XP? Either some Linux variant, or Windows 7.

Honestly I just want to get this computer working. I got XP because it was really cheap. I understand I'll probable have to get some new drivers to make it work, but I am fairly good at finding stuff in the internet and the package does come with some tips on installation.

Update:

So through my research on Google I have managed to get the correct driver and I slipstreamed it using nLite and have been able to get into Windows Set Up. Now my problem is that when I try to install it into a partition it cannot access my slipstream CD. I have tried this process on a new partition and on the current partition. I have even tried it with the SP1 and SP3 slipstreamed (separately) onto the disk as well. But every time I try it, it will go through and format the C: drive and then almost immediately says that it can't access the files on my slipstreamed disk. For a very brief second (brief enough where I had to use my phone to record and slow down the video), Windows Setup will try to read the drvindex.inf file and then says that it can't access the cd. From what I have read it has something to do with the Service packs, but Google hasn't really told me much about this problem or how to solve it.

Any advice?

Swifty and Chargeit, I should have listened to you before. I just installed Ubuntu and it was super quick and easy and I'm loving it!!!
