Hi everyone,
Recently I RMA'd my XFX 7970 DD due to freezing problem, XFX gave me a brand new r9 280x DD. There are some problem like flickering and artifact which is caused by the low memory clock, which is easily fixed by forcing the memory clock to be constant at 1500Mhz. However, under Furmark burn in test, I found that the VRM temperature would shoot up to 103°C under 5 minutes, even after I forced the fan to run at 100% through Afterburner. Here I attach the screen shot of the Furmark test. It reached 101°C in just under 5 minutes.

Is this normal for 280x? should I RMA this card as well?
Thank you very much for your attention.

I would RMA it and tell them this is your second time, so they will make sure to send to a good card this time. It may be just on furmark, but that still doesn't change the fact that the card is broken. it can cause more trouble down the line when your warranty expires.

Thank you for your reply.
I am currently in contact with XFX support. They give me options to send the card back for heatsink replacement, or they can send me the heatsink and let me change it myself.. so either way the flickering problem won't be permanently fixed. my card is under lifetime warranty, so I'm not worrying about my warranty. But it is quite annoying dealing with the RMA process. My last RMA left me with no GPU for more than 1 month.

Thank you for replying to my problem.
You might be right. However, my old 7970 managed to go though more than 1 hour of Burn-in test. And the temperature never reached this high. First the flickering problem, now this.. I guess this is my cue to switch to the Green team....

If you got lifetime warranty, might as well do what you did before to eliminate the artifacts, and have them send you a new cooler. If anything, you can RMA later. This way you don't have to spend money for shipping or wait a month for a new gpu, until you absolutely have no choice.
