asus r9 290 good for gaming

I have all the parts except graphigraphic card and monitor so tell me is asus r9 290 great for gaming i know that it is a high end gpu but i have found on internet that this card has an issue with fps and people are getting 20-40 frames with this graphic card so please tell me shall i buy or shall i go with gtx 770 i want r9 290 because it has mantle also so please reply and tell me will a 27" full hd monitor run older games like prince of persia sands of time,warrior within and spider man 1,2 on full screen without pixel problem

The R9 290 should thump the GTX770 --- even in games that typically favor nVidia.

If the card your considering is a DirectCU model -- even more so.

Yes the 290 will run a good amount faster than the 770. I'm not sure where you see the 20-40 FPS as thats how slow it will go if you run 4K resolution. Otherwise I run demanding games such ast far cry 3 or crysis 3 at full graphics, 1080p resolution and 8X AA and I average 50-60 FPS.
If you have a CPU that is too slow, it will slow down any video card for demanding games.
