I have a HP xw8200 that I want to max out with the addition of quad core 604 socket cpu's. The HP lit says the 3.8Ghz single core is the fastest (64-bit Intel Xeon processor at 3.80 GHz with 800 MHz FSB & 2 MB of L2 cache PH202A) for the motherboard - But I find later issued quad cores for the same socket and am thinking maybe someone else out there has tried it already....?

I'd go with what the literature says. The quad core processors that I've found for the 604 socket seem to be either really low freq speeds or really expensive per cpu.

For the money that I'm seeing these Xeon's priced at, you could build most of an up-to-date computer instead of using 7 year old processors.

The application is AVID PCI-X Arcadia boards for Nitris HD so the age of the system is appropriate, I want to max out the speed of the hardware. If I go with newer boards I'd lose the PCI-x functionality for the application, and video transfers like the faster speeds. Anyone have experience with the frequency slowdown associated with the 3.8 HT Nocona's, vis a vis the 2.93 Quad 1066 FSB chips of 2008? If they are all PGA604's, the 'Tigerton' chips look like a re-birth for HP that I'd like to explore...
The Xeon Tigerton is almost 3.0GHz but it's a quad-core CPU.

This would be a good choice and the price was ok. The next challenge was to find them. I got a pair on Ebay but now have concerns like the chipset. The Tigerton is a bit slower than the 3.8's single core Xeon's, which would use 2 installed in a HyperThreading fashion; with the pair of Quad's HT is no longer possible, but would video see a boost in performance without also changing the chipset? Will the BIOS affect the update? Is there anything else on the Mboard that would be affected by swapping out the single cores, adding adequate cooling and proceeding out into traffic? What about the OS, with XP home, XP supports 1 CPU in home edition, if I'm running professional it will see 2. This allows for the HT single core 3.80GHz Irwindale's, but will I have to upgrade the OS to 64bit xp or Win 7 for the OS to also not be a problem?

I've had multiple people on other discussion websites say that even though the Xeon dual core and quad core processors may be Socket 604, they will not function on a HP xw8200 motherboard. This is due to the xw8200 not having up-to-date driver support for the BIOS which would allow for multiple core CPUs. But is there anyone who has tried it already?

Remember, the point of this was to use the Avid boards which are PCI-X, I have G5's that have PCI-x but those cannot be upgraded any further without losing that functionality. The bottleneck with the Arcadia Base card is the slot it was designed for.

Is there a way to flash the chipset to upgrade the BIOS on the xw8200?

Update: The guy's that sell the bios upgrade took a pass on this, I did try to install the 7330 PGA604 socket 2.4Ghz quad core cpu (seats OK..) and this resulted in an red LED above the power button & a 5 beep error. Went back down to the 3.8Ghz dual cpu config.
