Hello guys!

I have had a GTX 460 working well enough for my needs, but it causes stability problems and needs to be replaced.

I've narrowed down the choices to a few:

  • HD 7850 ~182$
    R7 260X 2GB gddr5 OC edition ~200$
    R9 270 ~265$
    R9 270x ~285$
    R9 270x 4GB OC edition ~314$

Those are my prices (converted to USD).
I am a student (although only 1 semester remaining), but I don't care much for graphics, more for the game itself and not for full settings.
I work mostly on dual display setup with a lot of open windows, but when I game, its on one screen in full HD.
Also linux support is very important... I've read a lot of reviews (too much), and I still cant tell what is best choice, their price/performance ratio is almost IDENTICAL! :??:

My system is AMD Phenom II 965BE Quad Core on Asus M5A97 R2.0 with 16GB ram, SSD drive (for linux) and 1TB hdd for windows.

I also have Xbox360 at home, so I tend to choose either the 750 or 260X, as no sense in wasting money on vcard, while old Xbox runs the same games and more... while for the games I DO play (EVE-Online mostly), those mid-range are enough.
But even then, I don't know what is better - 7850 or 260X.. both 3 years warranty, one is more expensive a bit, but warranty covers OC.

Even the Linux related tests and reviews on Phoronix does not give me enough information to choose one over the other.

Please assist, any other aspects to consider? Will AMD cease drive support of one or the other sooner?

Thanks!

If you want AMD, for "casual" gaming and don't care about high settings, a R7 250X (=HD7770) would likely be sufficient. If you want more, you might find an even better price on a HD7850 than what you've listed.
If the "stability problems" (might be helpful to describe) aren't being caused by nVidia drivers, a GTX750Ti is an excellent, low-power choice.

Thank you for the answer, weird I have not received email notification :(

Anyway, the cheapest 750TI in my country, is 218$ using the same conversion ratio... and it is significantly weaker than the R7 260X!
The other option you suggested, the R7 250X, is only slightly cheaper, but significantly weaker!
I fail to see the logic, suggesting either more expensive and weaker, or cheaper and significantly weaker alternatives to the ones I've stated as alternatives from which I need to choose...

"Stability problems", are frequent "snow" stucks during games, Furmark, etc on both Windows and Linux, with any drivers.
At first diagnostics showed it as if it is PSU fault, but the problem was not resolved, a computer store lab tested and claiming the GPU shows the screen flickering, even during running memtest for 50+ hours...so they are very confident in their diagnostic even though I did not have such symptom.

But I dont want to derail the subject, lets focus on best alternative GPU, keep in mind this motherboard is M5A97 which is PCIE2.0 and not 3 - will those cards still work?

Thank you, I too was surprised to read those results, but you have to remember - this is the R7 260 card being tested, NOT the 260X, which seems to be MUCH better than the 750TI:

Furthermore, lets even assume you are right, and the 260X is not better than the 750TI in practice:
The fact remains, that the TI costs me 218$, while the 260X (OC edition) costs me only 200$.
And if you are wrong, I get more performance, for the same money...
Another tech specs only comparison: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R7-260X-vs-GeForce-GTX-750-Ti

Am I wrong? Any thoughts?

And damn, still email notification does not send me emails...
