Which card is better? The R9 290X is is only 50 more dollars from my area, and has 3 fans so I think the problem of heating will not be a declination of performance.
Bottom line - Which is better/by how much and is R9 290X worth an extra $50? Thanks!

I would probably say, if the 290x is 50$ pricier, i would go for the 780.
But if you can get the r9 290, for the same/lower than 780 price, that would be even better

At 1080p it goes like this (in most games):

GTX 780Ti>R9 290X>GTX 780>R9 290

The AMD cards are better at high resolutions/multiple monitors since they have more VRAM (4GB vs 3GB).

IMHO, if you can spend more money, get the R9 290X.

I'd say that extra $50 is worth it. Get the R9 290X. It also has the benefit of 4gb of VRAM, so multi-monitor is better and it is slightly more future proof. Just make sure that is won't bottleneck your CPU.

I am not sure, but isnt the r9 290 non x worth it better? I feel like there is no performance improvement where ever i see these two together.

Look at the sapphire Tri-X version: 8.1% between the non-x and the x. In that price range that's considered a big difference since diminishing returns start to kick in (you get less for your money).

Well, thanks for clearing that up :)  but i do believe that the r9 290 is better value as you said - diminishing return

Yes, it is better value. The real question is: Do you absolutely need more performance than the R9 290 can offer?

If you are only gaming on a 1080p monitor at 60hz, you would be fine with the 290 or the 780, no need for the next higher models. Those are for 1440p and 120hz/144hz setups, as well as triple monitors. Like others said, AMD cards are better at higher resolutions due to VRAM, but at 1080p, just get whatever performs the best. Be sure to look at benchmarks.

Also, if you are into recording your game play or twitch or anything like that, I would strongly consider Nvidia due to shadowplay. If that doesn't matter to you, stick to whatever is best performance for the money.

the performance difference between the 290 and 290x isn't that much and i feel the regular 290 is a much better value since you can get a sapphire tri-x or msi twin frozr for around $420ish. the performance difference between a 780 and a 780ti is much bigger but you end up paying for it. unless your looking at something like the evga classified 780 which will overclock to much higher level while being fully usable in stock form, the regular 290 is the better value.
