Computer is underperforming with games

I hope I am putting this in the right section!

So I have this computer for a while now and I'm not too tech savvy, but I do feel my computer it is quite underperforming when it comes to games. The specs seem to be "decent" but many games are unplayable due to low framerates even on the lowest settings.

Games such as

- Dota 2
- Dragon Age Origins
- Guild Wars 2
- Far Cry 2

just to name a few

I feel my computer should be able to run those games just fine at playable framerates, but even on the lowest settings these games drop well below 30fps. Any ideas what could be wrong?

The specs are

Nvidia GTX 650 1gb
AMD FX 6100
8 gb ram

GW2 is fairly demanding of the CPU. If your motherboard is suitable (e.g. has decent VRMs), you may get better performance with a good overclock. Otherwise, you may benefit from a CPU upgrade to a FX-6300 or FX-8320. A CPU overclock or upgrade will likely most help your minimum frame rate, which is where you see the worst "lag spikes."
Your video card is also modest, but should handle "Medium" settings pretty well, considering it is close to the HD7750, which is able to handle a mix of Medium and High settings at 1600x900 (I've not tried 1920x1080 on that card).
A graphics card upgrade will also help, particularly maximum and average frame rate, but likely not minimum. Make sure your PSU is up to any upgrade. A GTX750Ti would be a good choice, and needs no auxiliary power.

Hmm, although a hardware upgrade would provide some performance boosts, I would think that his/her current setup would be able to handle those games with good fps even at medium settings. Sounds like a driver issue to me. You might want to try uninstalling your video drivers and re-installing them. go to nvidea.com and go to their support page to get the latest for your model.

I don't know much about the others, but I've played GW2 on a variety of systems. For example, an i5 with a HD7770 plays more smoothly than a Phenom II X4 970 with a HD7870, even on lowered graphics settings, because minimum FPS is MUCH better.
A HD7750 can play on a mix of medium and high settings at 1600x900, but will have some visible "jitter" with an e6750 vs. smooth play on an i5.
I think it was a year or so ago that Don used a FX-6100 in the midrange SBM machine and it was very disappointing, even overclocked.
If lowering settings doesn't help [much], or takes the "fun" out of the game, some upgrades (if in budget) will probably be needed.

Thanks for the answers thus far!

I have reinstalled drivers, but this didnt fix the problem.
While a hardware upgrade does make sense, I dont think that the performence im getting with the current hardware is what it should be. , I should be able to run games at a playable framerate on lowest settings should I not?
