problem to format laptop with usb drive

why when i hit F12 and choose usb drive to format, only black screen is display and i've waited half an hour, but nothing happens?

What are you using that allows F12 to be pressed and used for format a drive? I have seen that on some Dell computers that pressing Ctrl+F12 repeatedly during the boot process will allow you to do a factory reset. If you are using Windows then why not try inserting the flash drive, open Windows Explorer, right click on the drive and then click on format?
