Can anyone tell me why ASUS P5NSLI would have a problem with 1GB DDR2 667MHz DESKTOP RAM PC2- 5300U 240PIN SDRAM? We bought 4 matching sticks from an Ebay special trying to get a little more memory in an old work PC. Maybe a BIOS setting needs changed? Its set to 6 7 7 7 currently from whoever last rebuilt this thing and 2X. Not sure what else might be the problem. TIA

Solution

Maybe you should verify that the memory is OK first. Download the .ISO file for memtest and burn yourself a CD from it: http://www.memtest.org/
Boot to the CD and let it run for at least one full pass on each stick. Only test 1 stick at a time so you know which one is bad, if any. You can download the MB manual here: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5NSLI/HelpDesk_Manual/
Go to page 1-17 and see if you followed the requirements properly for installing memory.

Try resetting the BIOS to default* either with the on board jumper or the BIOS option. I used to have that same board years ago. It was extremely finicky with memory when all 4 DIMM slots were populated.

*If you've made any changes in BIOS you need to keep, be sure to mark them down so you can change them back. For example: changing SATA mode from IDE to AHCI.

I didnt build the thing initially so Im not sure what may be changed from default. We just put a new HD in it and im installing XP (dont laugh lol) on it now. Has to run XP to be able to link with this really old DOS photo program we use apparently. Long story.... This is a bit out of my comfort zone. Im a gamer... dont know anything about DOS lol.

If I just go into BIOS and mark every current option down, I cant mess it up if I can change it all back to what it is now right?

Right. There probably isn't much you'd have to change anyway. The default settings are the 'failsafe' settings. The only one that comes to mind is the SATA mode I mentioned. But I doubt that will enter into the situation if you are trying to install old XP. So, you should be OK with the default settings anyway.

Was this memory sold new or used?
