Hi,

I'm helping my cousin build a PC after having a lot of success with my i7 4770k build;

We did research and since he is not going to be overclocking, and wants to get a GPU (in the $100-150 range - maybe a 7850 or 7870 or 660 gtx), we decided a Xeon E3 1230 V2 for $200 is a practical and budget friendly choice vs. the i7 4770k for $270.

My only issue is that the Xeon is normally a server cpu and I am wondering if we need to worry about the other components. For example, are we OK with any Z77 1155 motherboard? There is a good deal on a Asus Z77-A for $80 right now for example.

And what about other components such as ram? can we buy as normal if we go with the Xeon??

Anything else we should consider before picking a xeon e3 1230 over an i7 4770k?

Thank you!

btw he uses applications such as Cubase, Reason, Ableton Live. Light gaming such as league of legends, but he will want 3 displays, possibly 4.

Solution
A Xeon 1230v2 would perform almost identically to an i7 3770. A Xeon 1230v3 would perform almost identically to an i7 4770 (though it's LGA 1150).

Just check the motherboard compatibility list on the manufacturer's website to see whether it's compatible.

Any RAM speed should be fine as long as it's within the motherboard specification.

I'd stick with the i5/i7 personally. Most everything can be improved with overclocking. Xeons don't allow access to the multiplier. Hyperthreading does improve your PC's performance but not in the same way that overclocking does. Sure it helps if you're working with large files but for the most part if you're just editing videos for Youtube consumption than the Xeon isn't warranted IMO.

OK thanks for the info. didn't realize there was a 1230 v3 that is more comparable to the 4770k. lot of options to decide upon

XEONS ARE FOR SERVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hahahahahaha I'm just kidding :) The 1230v2/v3 are awesome! The best thing is you can pair it with a B or H chipset. I've used the e3 Xeons twice now and both times it was paired with a B75/B85 motherboard.

I don't know if a sub $150 video card will give him enough vRAM for what he needs though. He may want to consider getting a 4GB 270x or 760 if he wants to use 3 or 4 monitors.
