My volume icon disppeared. Im running windows xp on a Dell desktop. when i go to control panel/sounds to click put on icon, it says, Volume Control program has not been installer. How did this program just disappear after 7 years?? someone posted to go to start, run and enter cmd which takes me to c:\documentsandsettings\myname. According to instructions it should show, c:. I can't get to the c: prompt. I have been trying to do this all day. I do have my windows xp disc. thank you

Does this work? "Start>Control Panel>Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices>Sounds and Audio
Devices. On the Properties page choose Volume and check the box labeled
'Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar'."

What about: "R-click the taskbar > Properties > Taskbar > Customize > check if the Volume control is on either the Current or Past lists.

Or: Start > Help and Support > Fixing a problem > Games , sound and video > Sound troubleshooter. Which will eventually lead to the Master Volume control.

Or: System restore to the latest restore point.
