Is my cpu bottlenecking my gpu?

Hey all. I have a gtx 650ti 3gb VRAM as my GPU. I got this gpu so I could play newer games like Dayz Standalone ect.
I dont get very good performance in Dayz Standalone (15 - 20 fps). But other people with the same gpu as me run it fine.

My cpu is an AMD athlon II x4 (quadcore) 640 3.0 ghz

I have 6gb ram which I think is enough for just normal gaming, >so i'm wondering if my cpu is bottlenecking my gpu?

Any insight as to why I'm not getting the best performance in DayZ Standalone would be helpful. Ive already followed a perfomance optimizer guide to get the fps i have now.

Your CPU isn't the best but paired with the GTX 650ti it's a nice budget combo, I'd keep gaming resolutions to 720p though. Might could do 1080p on low settings. Have you tried the stuff in the video that shadowlessfigure linked to optimize Day Z?

turning the clouds off nearly doubled his FPS in the video. I only got about 30fps on ultra settings with my high end i5 3570k overclocked and HD7950 setup, so I play it on low when I do play the game.

Although I quit playing due to zombies lagging/glitching through walls and killing me....BS deaths really pissed me off in that game. From all the problems I've read with it, you're really not missing much >_>

I wouldn't expect decent frame rates with a 650 ti, even compared to a 750 ti. Still, there is a possibility the 640 is bottlenecking, but it's single core performance shouldn't be too bad. Have you tried overclocking your CPU and even your RAM? What speed is your 650 ti running at?

No. Not unless the game is CPU intensive. Even then, that isn't 'bottle neck' that would be the problem. But the 3 ghz Athlon II will not bottleneck a GTX 650 TI. I have used that combination before with a budget build. They are pretty evenly balanced.

My gpu clock is 980 mhz - Unless my cpu or ram came overclocked which I doubt they did, then no neither are overclocked.

If your MB allows you to overclock, try it. Even a slight overclock with a stock cooler might make a difference. PM me or other members if you need any help OCing.

This, exactly this. I have a 2500k @ 4.4Ghz with a GTX 680 and the game still runs like crap. I've done the optimizations and disabled all appropriate settings and still only get 20fps in towns. Not to mention the retarded Zombie AI and glitches.

You should try the DayZ mod, so much better. Standalone isn't worth playing until they add vehicles and optimize it, although I doubt they will ever be able to get it running great with that engine and zombie mess. Mod isn't optimized all that well either, but it sure runs a lot better than the Standalone, all while having more content like vehicles and tents.

I'll try out the settings in this video and see how it goes. If that that doesn't work I guess ill just have to wait till I build my new computer. DayZ not optimized too op.

Thanks all for responding

You're welcome. And I would actually wait unless you REALLY want a new whole pc. You could get a better GPU like an r9 270x assuming your power supply is good enough. Even on good cpu's the game runs like crap.

And I'll have to redownload the old DayZ mod. I remember having more fun on it actually. Some of the custom servers had A.I. bandits running around and I liked the vehicles on the few maps I could find working ones on.

The standalone just seems like a mess....I got it the day it came out, played a little bit, and the lagging and glitching zombies killed it for me, it wasn't even the garbage loot for the most part, and it was shocking to find some friendly people on it....coming from playing Infestation for awhile where it's shoot on sight lol (garbage game btw I wouldn't get it >_> )
