I'm getting a new rig and i don't know whether to buy the NH D14 or a closed liquid cooler. What will be the pros of a liquid cooler over the d14.If liquid is better, please suggest some good coolers with low noise.I'm planning to overcloack a bit (~4.2ghz)

generally speaking, air coolers are quieter, but liquid coolers are more effective... if you are just going for 4.2ghz, then nh-d14 is more than capable.

actualy you can make any cooler quiet if you pop some noctua fans on it.

And if you are only looking at 4.2 ghz overclock then even the crappiest water cooler will be able to do it...

what do you prefer yourself? air or liquid?

If you can wait until June Intel is coming out with its I7 4790K that will overclock to 5GHz. Noctua just came out with the best air cooler in the world, the NH-D15. It is far quieter than almost any other water cooler and cools as good as most any water coolers.

Make sure you get a new motherboard for the processor that can handle it, Z97. And get RAM with no heat spreader.

I already bought my 4770k and sadly there is no nh d15 were i live. Why ram with no heat spreader?
Motherboard is Asus sabertooth z87
Ram is 2x8gb kingston genesis

It would be tough to get tall ram under a NH-D14 cooler.

Looks like your kingston genesis is okay though.

So the nh d14 is good enough and i don't need to go water?

The few water coolers that cool better than the NH-D14 tend to be way noisier.
