This system will be Mini-ITX so no crossfire! I want to run Skyrim @1080p with ultra-realistic graphics mods! They are all around the same price in the UK.

Solution
I would say 770, they are both very close as far as performance, some games the 280x will perform better, and others the 770 will outperform the 280x.

I have also lost faith in AMD, I just replaced my 7970 with a 780 ti, I think nvidia drivers are more reliable, and all the extra goodies you get with nvidia are nice. IMO it just nvidia is just a more reliable mfg.

Like Lowriderflow said @ 1080p most AAA games only use around 2gb of memory, so unless you plan on going 1440p or higher you will not have any problems.

Here are some in game FPS charts of the 770 vs r9 280x

definitely either hte 770 or 280x. They're pretty close. I personally would get a 770 b/c radeon has lost my trust with all the horrible drivers over the past few years. I used to be AMD fanboy, now i only buy Nvidia GPUs b/c everything actually works as it's supposed to! the 760 4gb is a waste.

at 1080p, none of these cards are going to use over 2gb of VRAM... only at 2560x1440 or 5760x1080 would you even start going over 2gb.

Skyrim modding can crank up the VRAM usage by a heck of a lot. It's certainly possible to go above 2GB at 1080p.

Agree with Sakkura. Skyrim mods, specially the graphical ones, will most likely break the line of 2gb Vram. ANd you don't need to go past the 1080p. It's really about what mods you're going to use and the number of them.

Whilst it is true that modding skyrim takes more than 2GB vram, the 4GB 760 still won't handle a heavily modded skyrim well enough compared to a 2GB GTX 770. SO the 4GB 760 is something you should not consider. Perhaps if you are running in SLI but would recommend single gpu over SLI.
I would say the R9 280X is a good choice but the GTX 770 is not a bad card either.

Or if he plays Skyrim with many mods, than it gets to 3.0GB of Vram :p
