If you actually need the i7-#k (because you will load the cpu with rendering, encoding, or other heavy workload that uses hyperthreading AND plan on overclocking it)... I'd say get either the 4770K or 4790K... the stock difference is only 0.1GHz (3.9 max vs 4.0)... so question is if you want to wait for the additional 100MHz in stock speed.
I always ask the question if you will actually need the i7 (for hyperthreading) over a similar frequency i5 (save yourself ~$100)

Stock difference is 500MHz
4770k running 3.5GHz stock and 3.9 GHz turbo boost
and
4790k should run 4.0 GHz stock and 4.4 GHz turbo boost.

Official release date is not out yet :(. Estimates are june/july. Most optimistic are early june and pesimistic push it to mid-late july/august. But it should not be so far as they release 4790 not so long ago and new motherboard with intel 9 chipset are rolling out right now too.

Other question is how will be 4790k priced.
But I'm in same situation I was going to buy new PC with 4790 or 4770k/4771 but now I'm waiting for 4790k.
By reports and rumors and marketing info it should have better termal efficiency and possible higher OC but those are still just rumors.

I'm curious as to why TomsHardware still hasn't written an article in the CPU section regarding the 4790K, an additional bump of 500MHZ is pretty significant news. Unless its because its still to be 100% verified as true?. Quite a few other sites have reported the base clock as 4GHZ now so it seems to be that way....

I think all those are based on one asian report. I think it is reputable source but there is not much to write about in article at this point. Based info about better heat management and so was i think mentioned before and only new info is 4GHz stock speed not much to write about.

This should be original post which started this new 4GHz madness :).

Probably 4790k will be released at the time of Computex or so. I think you can wait a little and get the new one. But let me tell you something: the architecture is the same with some cosmetic improvements, so you don't expect a great difference between both processors. Broadwell (if definitively is released) or Skylake will be another story, but not before 1H 2015.

Rumors have it that the Devil's Canyon Refresh of the current Haswell processors (I am definitely waiting for the 4790K) will be announced and released during Computex 2014 on JUNE 2nd! Keep your fingers crossed!

1H 2015 for next gen chips?.. Hmm I already have a 4770K chip not sure if I should get the 4970K and new formula vii which is sure to be announced at computex as well. Also the new rgb keyboard by corsair will be announced along side it's pricing!
Decisions decisions lol...

Best guess(rumor) is that the i7-4790K will be available June 2.
Price is expected to be about $350.
i5-4690K will be available at that time too. Expect $230.
Expect initial price gouging.
But... you will get a superior binned chip with the i7 and a starting clock of 4.0
and a potential overclock approaching 5.0

If you have the budget and the patience, wait.

I would expect the 4790K to be released at around $340. Since the 4790 has already been released and is only $10 more than the 4770 without unlocked multipliers. But again, all just speculation so don't hold me to it!

From what I've seen in a few articles, lately, the i7 4790k will have a suggested retail cost of around $359.99 (USD). I, too, am looking at waiting for the 4790k for my new build, and am hoping that it comes out around June 2nd as I read a week or so ago.

Seems one of the early review samples had rather dissapointing overclocking ability and surprisingly higher wattage usage at full load :s hopefully not a trend.

From a report I have seen, the 4790k runs about 10°C hotter than the 4770k. Either wait for Broadwell or Haswell-E. I've learned that the 5820k will have six cores and priced at under $400. It will have the best performance per dollar. I'd rather get that than the 4790k.

There's no difference. the guy above is right. it's not a Haswell Refresh it's a Haswell ReHASH. Samething same cpu all they did was take their better performing 4770K's and bin em higher. they are all capable of 4.6-4-8-(5.0 good ones). Same b.s. AMD pulled with the supposed "difference (lol) between the FX 8320 vs 8350 etx. just binned differently. You're paying for exactly the same thing they're just managing to milk out a little extra cash from you THIS IS WHAT THEY DO,They didn't get to be big companies by just giving stuff away
