Could anybody help me here? My 500 GB Buffalo HD-PCTU3 external hard drive is already in a state, but what's worse now, is that even after having formatted and partitioned it it is showing about 95 MB occupied. I tried several suggestions on the web but the space keeps showing up in the properties tab of my drive in My Computer. I have a feeling IT is causing the freezing and slowing problems but I can't get rid of it! Please, do help! Also I am worried about chkdsk as it always freezes and reverts my drive to 'Local Disk' and my drive has to be yanked out after an impossible period of waiting and formatted all over again. Again, any help would be a godsend!

As with all problems - you need to issolate it. As such - remove the external drive from the system and see if your problem goes away. If so- it is your external.

While you are at it - run CHKDSK against your C: drive and such - just to ensure your other drives are happy.

Now the fun.

Although not generally needed - if you are having issues like this - you may want to start up your system in safe mode. I know it's a bit of overkill - but it limits the drivers and allows for a bit more control in these situations.

First - backup any data you actually need from the external.
Second - remove all partitions from the external
Third - create one single partition
Fourth - format this partition and run CHKDSK
Fifth - move your data back.

Good luck.
