external hard disk for what? Do you want it to be powered through a usb cable like a passport ultra type thing, or one that plugs into the wall for power and into the pc for data transfer?
The self powered are 2.5" 5400 rpm drives and are slim and read/write around 80-100mbps. The wall powered ones are 3.5" 7200 rpm drives that read/write closer to 150-180mbps.
If you want it to be portable, buy a wd passport ultra 2tb for around $120. Small and slim, powered through usb so you can just plug it into laptop and go.
If you want for desktop for like back up and such. you can get a wd 3-4tb mybook for around $120-150.
