Wondering what size samsung 840 evo ssd i would need to install for a standalone boot drive.

Will windows 7 boot on a 128gb ssd?

Been searching here for approximate sizes of the windows 7 software but not had any luck.

I have a 2 year old dell xps 8700 i7-4770 3.40 ghz, 16gb ram

I have 1TB hard drive 7500rpm, with 351gb free and that includes windows 7, 64 bit

want to move the windows over to a new 128gb ssd.

I have acronis true image 2013 and will use that to clone windows and place it on the samsung ssd

Might there be any problems I'm not seeing in doing this?

thanks for your help

I have a 128 GB SSD and it works very well. Windows 7 installation needs about 20 GB of space. I have another 4 GB of programs installed. Backups, photos, documents, etc. are on my secondary HDD.

I don't think that Acronis can migrate only the OS. The only program that I've heard of that can do that is Paragon's "Migrate OS to SSD": http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components...
It costs $19.95 but I hear of $5 discount coupons floating around the net.

Otherwise you can do a fresh install of Windows 7 on the new SSD. Just be sure to disconnect your HDD before you do that. After the Windows installation on the SSD is complete, then shut down and reconnect your HDD.
