I have a 1tb Seagate HDD that holds 931gb of space. It says I only have 11gb of free space which would mean I have 920gb of used space on my drive. But when I open the drive and check the total size of all the files it's 812gb. So what happened to the other 108gb? If I only have 812gb of used space how come my drive says it has 920gb? I'm pretty sure it's not partitioned unlike my C drive. Someone please help! I'd really like to have that extra 108gb. Thanks in advance

Are you using that space for page file? also you can download spacemonger and use this program to see how much space is used by every file and so on. This program will help you figure out what is going on and what is using that extra space.

Well first off a 1TB hard drive isn't exactly 1TB, it's actually around 930GB. Then you're OS would about 20 GB. That and a System restore file leaves you left with ~900GB. It's perfectly normal, and unfortunately you can't get that 100GB of space.

Razr is exactly right that is assuming you're confused on what's written on the drive for space compared to what windows says is available. However if you truly are missing space you can use a disk space utility to give you a graphical representation of your file system or you can run check disk to see if you have any corrupted space because a repair of that space will restore it.

Page file takes up space, then there's a bunch of files hidden by Windows, you also may have a few restore points that are hidden, also system logs, error reports, etc

My Seagate drive is just a secondary drive, my OS is on my C: drive which had 100mb of reserved space. So I don't believe that's taking up space on my external hard drive. I'm not exactly sure what page files are but i'll try that spacemonger program and see if it'll show me what's taking up space.

Trying space monger is a good Idea. Page files are a designated amount of space on a HDD that the system can use as ram if you run low on ram. Yes it is a lot slower but this is what it is used for.

It worked! I downloaded space monger and it showed my my D drive had a recycle bin that had 121gb of deleted files in it. I think all the folders i deleted that were too big for my recycle bin just got send to one on my D drive. And it says it's empty in Windows Explorer so that program really did the trick. Thanks all :)
