Hi there!

I really want to install Hackintosh on my PC. I currently have Windows 8 installed onto my SSD with many programs dumping data to a secondary 1tb HDD to reduce writes. I also have a backup Windows 7 installed on that 1tb HDD.

I've now installed a completely new 1tb HDD in my computer and I would like to install Mac OS X on it, I've read around and I know it is quite a complex procedure plagued by errors if you are unfortunate enough to have incompatible parts, and even if you don't they may still occur.

My parts are:

Gigabyte Z87 HD3
I5 4670k
R9 280x Vapor X

I have seen people with the mobo-cpu combo successfully complete their installs, but I'm not sure if it was done using a dual-boot system, though since I'm installing on a completely new drive and not a partition, I'm not sure if it would really matter.

Are my parts compatible? Is there anything different I would have to do to install Mac OS X 10.9 on a different HDD to make it so I can choose between Windows 8, Windows 7 or Mac OS X on boot?

Solution

You can't as they have different file systems, one is mac os x ext. journaled and one is Microsoft NTFS, they wont work together on the same drive.

as for your other question, *some* dongles work some don't. its a good chance you can use generic kexts on it and just add the HWID to it.

Ur doin it wrong dud.

The intel Z87 Chip set = fully compatible with 10.9 n patched 10.8.5.
You picked a good mobo for this.
Compatibility lists:
http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/HCL_10.9.1

http://www.tonymacx86.com/420-building-customac-buyer-s-guide-april-2014.html#motherboards

Your board is well within compatibility Your CPU is fully compatible
Your GPU is questionable, if its a reference PCB board you *should* be good. The problem is the cards where so expensive no one has really bought one for the hack.

First step is to download 10.9.1, pick your poison for that. I have always used http://www.niresh12495.com/ for windows pc's. Niresh is a awesome guy.
After you have it on a USB drive, go ahead and remove drives (unplug sata cables where convenient) expect the one you will install OSX to.

Connect your GPU to a 1920x1080 Progressive scan @75 HZ or less / lower monitor, Via DVI Or DVI Dual-link

------- Motherboard BIOS Settings ----------

Next go into your motherboard settings, set drive priority 1 to your mac HDD, it will have to stay this way as long as you use osx ( the bootloader is going to be on this drive)

Set your SATA controller to AHCI

Are you HDD's in raid? If so your going to have to disable that.

Turn off Turbo boost

Turn off HPET if you can

Undo any OC for the install

Save Mobo Settings and apply

----- Installing OS 10.9.1 ----------

Boot from your USB Drive.

Start the installer

Hit options on the installer
- hnak's Ethernet or a Kext specific to your boards lan
- Realtek audio kext for your board
- Any skins you want for the boot loader

Start the installer, Let it run for about 25 - 45 minutes, keep your eye on it. It may appear frozen for 1 - 2 minutes, put your mouse pointer on the end of the blue bar, this thing moves in insanely small increments.

Onces that done, Either comment back on this post or PM me with pics of your /system report, you SLE Folder and desktop and monitor / display control.

I'd like to ask about internet connection. I currently use a small USB dongle as an adapter, would that be an issue? I suppose I will need to buy one compatible with Mavericks.

Actually I can!

You have to partition the device using Mavericks' Disk Utility in to 2 partitions, one with Mac OS X Journaled and the second as MS DOS. The second partition is readable by Windows and you can format that to NTFS for storage.

I'm getting a new USB dongle compatible for OS X. My current one is outdated anyway!
