Need help on recovering old files on a harddrive from an old dell desktop from 2001 with windows xp to a newly built pc with windows 7. I'm pretty good with computers, but this will be the first time trying to do something like this, just need a basic overview/steps to take in order to successfully do this. thank you in advance

The easiest way to go about is to buy a 3.5-inch external hard drive enclosure which plugs in to a USB port on your new PC.

Open the enclosure, put the old hard drive in to it and attach the connector to it.
Close the enclosure.
Plug the enclosure in to a mains wall socket, then plug it in to a USB port.
(You can plug it in to your new computer's USB port even when Windows is running).

Windows should recognise the drive and install the driver for it automatically.
You will then have a new drive icon and drive letter in 'My Computer'.
Double-click on that icon to read or copy the contents of the drive, just like using the internal hard drive.

Buying an external enclosure for it means you don't have to open your computer's system case and mess about with a screwdriver to install it.
