Before I state my problem, here's my specs :

2 week old : ASUS R9 280X DCUII TOP ( bought this because I'm planning to upgrade my cpu and motherboard but not now )

AMD A10-5800K @4.2Ghz
MSI FM2-A85XA-G65
8GB GSkill Ares 1866 (2x4gb) Kit
Thermaltake SMART SE 730W
WD Caviar Blue 7200Rpm 1TB
OS : Unofficial Windows 7 ROG E3 x64 Bit

-----------------------------------

here's my problem, i have two monitors im currently using ,
1x ( 1080p Monitor ) and 1x ( old model monitor 1024x768 max reso )

and i'm currently testing all my games using my 1024x768 monitor,
Games tested: (using fraps) using 1024x768 reso 70hz

Catalyst Versions Tested : 13.11 and 14.4

Dirt 3 (100+ fps)
CS:GO (120+ fps)
NFS RIVALS (frame unlock to 60) but drops to 40+ and makes game slow
NFS MOST WANTED 2012 (dropping to 35~50 fps)

yeah i know there's a bottleneck on my current cpu, but the problem is, im running @1024x768 resolution and still not getting good frame rates on certain games, i thought it (the lower the reso , more fps)

whats the prob here ?
could it be my OS ?
or something else ?
i need to know :) Thanks !

Solution

Ok, I understand. That is the only thing that I can...

I have that same card, and I happen to like those same games. I am able to keep a steady 50-60 FPS maxed out on all of those games on a 1920x1080 monitor. I am running windows 8.1, but that shouldn't make that much of a difference. The only thing that could be the problem is the CPU. This video sums it up pretty nicely. It's not the same CPU or GPU, but it's the same concept and message.

yeah i think my cpu is the weak link, but my 5800k is like the proc on the vid , this is 750k with out the iGPU.
i dunno whats wrong but i think i should have more fps because im testing in a 1024x768 resolution.

gonna wait for more answers

Ok, I understand. That is the only thing that I can think of that would be causing those problems. It might also be that NFS games simply aren't as well optimized.

yeah thats what im thinking too. :)

Hi and welcome to toms hardware!

I love AMD but hate these issues.

"yeah i know there's a bottleneck on my current cpu"
Your GPU is the part being bottlenecked, not the CPU, you probably mean it the other way round.

I only have one solution for you to reduce the bottleneck, It's time to give your APU an overclocking turbocharge!

i have it turbo to 4.2 with 1.37500 V
i havent tried going pass 4.2 , and my current team underload is 32'C
i need a little help pushing it :D

do you have a decent CPU cooler?, I would suggest you crank it up further if the case. Not too much, your MSI motherboard vrm is quite poor, you can fry it if unlucky if you OC too much.

Could you also try your other long blue PCI-E X16/X8 (Blue/black mode) slot?

Great to see people overclock!

but can you help me get upto maybe 4.4ghz ? :D

i think lower reso = more frame rates

that is great temps, if you never go above 85 degrees, that is still regarded as good.

4.4Ghz is doable.

Lowering the resolution should help, but the problem is, your GPU does benefit more from it then CPU, as the CPU usage doesn't vary a whole lot when the resolution is lowered, the higher the resolution, the more GPU effected it is, lower resolution more CPU effected, as since your CPU is already bottlenecking, that is what I would have expected.

Problem is, when you do increase the resolution, CPU usage is still more demanding, but the GPU is far more, GPU scaling will always be effected by the CPU at any resolution, though surprisingly less at a higher resolution, as a GPU is far more dependent on higher resolutions then CPU's.

i currently have HDMI, i might need to buy a new monitor , but i am planning to sell my motherboard and cpu, to upgrade to an intel i5 3570k or amd 8350 but not soon because i barely saved enough to buy this card :D
