Help! Hot GPU

I built a PC three or so years ago, with help from you fine fellows. It was my first and only build. Couldn't have done it without your help:

i7 950
Kuler 920 CPU water cooler
ASUS Sabertooth X58
ASUS GTX 570 24 GB Ram (upgrade a year ago)
Corsair 750TX power supply
CoolerMaster 932 HAF Case

The problem is, my GPU runs HOT, always has. Like 97C PLUS at full load. Even a 50% load for extended periods of time runs 85C plus. Playing World of Tanks on low gives temperatures between 90-95C. This can't be right. Very recently I decided to improve the airflow through the case. I took out the top 200mm fan and replaced it with 2 120mm exhaust fans. I added that 120mm fan at the bottom, no difference. What else can I do here? My cable management isn't horrible, shouldn't be restricting airflow. I'm at a loss here, help!

There is another 200mm fan on the panel I removed to take the photo. That fan pushes air into the case.

Edit: Is there any reason my photo (imgur.com link) wouldn't be showing up? I used the img tags. Here's the link:

Solution

Remove completely the GPU fcooler, clean everything from the dust if there is, reapply thermal paste. I think will solve your problem.

I just cleaned the whole rig top to bottom, including the GPU fan. Furthermore, that can't be the issue as it's had temp problems from the very beginning, when it was obviously completely dust free :??:

I agree with above poster. Make sure your GPU isn't clogged with dust.

I noticed you mentioned adding a bottom fan. You should watch out with those. They will help airflow, but also can introduce a lot of dust into your system since it acts like a vacuum. If you're going to use a bottom fan, make sure it has a filter, and that you clean the filter and the inside of your case regularly. If your computer is on the ground, I would not suggest a bottom fan at all.

What's your ambient like? That GPU shouldn't be hitting those temps.

My 780 at max load only gets into the low 70's, and my ol'ladys HD 7850 maxes at 65c. And she runs her system with the window open during the summer.

Are you sure your GPU fan is working correctly? Have you tried setting it to 100% and testing some games? Did you accidentally limit the fan speed to something really low?

**The inside of your case and fan set up looks fine. You shouldn't have the heat problems you have. I think there is something wrong with the GPU fan, or thermal paste.

You might want to attempt to get it fixed by the company, or take it apart and put on new thermal paste/pads.

I didn't know that about bottom fans. It is on the ground, I may have to remove it. I was thinking about putting in one of these:

I can assure you the GPU isn't clogged with dust :) I just cleaned it yesterday. Maybe I got a bad GPU, and since I was (still am) very inexperienced I didn't notice the high temp warning signs from the beginning.

Roger that. I will do this and report back. Thanks for the help, both of you.

Update:

I was thinking, I might as well install an aftermarket cooling system on it while I'm at it. Can anyone recommend a good cooling system that would work with my set up and card?

:p

I'm thinking of ordering this thermal paste to use: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186038

For the GPU.

I already have a Kuhler 920 cooling the CPU that exhausts out the back. I think with my latest fan upgrades that airflow through the case is good. I think you guys might be right that the GPU heatsink is clogged with dust, as my house doesn't have a recirculating air system with a filter, so it gets dusty up in here. While I'm taking apart the videocard to clean it, I might as well install an aftermarket cooling system to improve temps. I have no experience with GPU cooling systems though, so I'm looking for advice :)

My card is a 1279MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 (ASUStek Computer Inc)

Fair enough. Thanks for your help bro. I'll update this thread with the results of cleaning and the reapplication of thermal paste.

OK.

So I decided not to wait for the thermal paste and take apart the GPU and clean it out.

Turns out it looked like this:

The fan was relatively clean, but the heat sink was more or less useless do to the crazy dust build up.

After I cleaned it out and stress tested the GPU, it maxed out at 77C after 6 minutes plus at 99% load. Not amazing, but SO much better. It idles at 43C or so, around the same as the motherboard.

Thanks guys!
