So I caught wind of Broadwell supporting the Z97 chipset so it got me thinking should I get my self a nice Z97 board now (thinking about this one http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-z97g55s...) and an i3 4150 then when Broadwell launches get a cheap board for the i3 and drop a new i5 broadwell CPU in the Z97 board? Or should I stick to the original plan and get a i5 4570/90 and a H87 board now? Or feel free to suggest anything else that I should possibly do any help is appreciated thanks :) !

Many are having these thoughts.

I suggest you plan on a Z97 based motherboard.
Wait until June 2 when we should get a announcement of the devils canyon cpu chips. i5-4690K or i7-4790K
They should not be much more than current non K parts.
I would not expect that you would have any compelling reason to switch to broadwell. But... it is wise to preserve that option.

Well I was thinking i3 and Z97 for about 180 quid (then Broadwell when it releases) or i5 and H87 for about 220 quid but with no Broadwell option unless I spend an extra 30-40 pounds. Why is it never a good time to buy a CPU because if you buy one now in 18 months it's outdated

Just get the i5 4590 and H97 motherboard and get the best of both worlds.

and for the record a 4570 + H87 motherboard will not be outdated for many years.

Yeah... I'm still using a poorish AMD CPU from 5 years ago and it's okay for most games. A 4570 should last until well after Skylake hits.

That said, I'm switching to H97 and i3 myself, as my current CPU is really starting to show its age and an upgrade path to Broadwell will let me keep the motherboard another ~5 years at least, if it doesn't break.

Either way I go it's going to be a quantum leap over what I've got at the moment (AMD A8 3870k ~3 years old good GPU performance on par with HD 4400 from Intel from what I've seen but my god the CPU part is slow even with a chunky OC 3.9 GHz) But this solution looks the best
