hi, i bought an off the shelf PC from Asus a couple of years ago, and it has the OS saved on a factory restore partition. I am considering upgrading to an SSD. Is it possible to install the windows package from the partition on my HDD to the new SSD? or would i have to purchase cloning software to get just the OS?

Purchase software and get everything from the old disk to the SSD. Acronis True Image works very well, I've used it a number of times do just what you want to do. In my cases it was replacing slow laptop HDDs with SSDs.

Hello... You can install with only your SSD connected for best results... Download the correct ISO for your Windows product KEY from here... http://www.pcworld.com/article/248995/how-to-install-wi... And Download and install the Windows ISO to USB/DVD Tool, to convert the ISO.... make sure you check mark "Make Bootable" and you will have a installable hardcopy of Windows... use your key to install.
After Windows driver have been installed for all your hardware, and is HAPPY... connect your HD... right click Computer, Manage, Disk management, right click the graphics disk area of your hardrive, "Mark as Active" Its a security thing to allow new drives attached to your computer, to be use.
You will now have a fresh install without Bloatware on your SSD... Some programs will need the shortcut re-set/re-directed to your D:\ drive and some will need the software re-installed, but your HD will still have all your Data on it to transfer and use.
You will also still be able to Boot to your HD using your BIOs BOOT options if a need a rises.
