I am going to use this system for gaming/general home & office use. I got some free components from a friend who is upgrading his system and I need to buy a few more to complete this build.

Here's what I have:
OS: Windows 7, 64 bit
HDD: Western Digital WD 3 TB 3.5-Inch Desktop Mainstream
SSD: Kingston Digital 120GB SSDNow V300
Graphics: SAPPHIRE DUAL-X R9 280 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5
CPU: Intel® Core™ BX80646 Quad-Core Cache i5-4430
Monitor: 1080p Samsung 23.6" LED Monitor S24C230BL
Case: Corsair Carbide Series 500R Arctic White Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower

I also have a logitech mouse & keyboard, a wireless nic card, a optical drive, and I want to overclock the graphics card.

Here's what I need (I'm looking for best value/bang for buck hardware to complete this system -- also, according to Sapphire's website, I need 500W power supply for this GPU).

* 8 or 16 GB ram
* Motherboard
* Power Supply (at least 500W)
* x2 Top Fans (120mm or 140mm)

Thanks for any help!

Kingston SSDNow V300 uses cheap flash memory which doesn't meet the advertised speed. Go for Crucial M500 or Samsung EVO or AData.
8GB ram is fine for gaming and casual uses.

Motherboard: Get a H87 or H97 motherboard.

Power supply: XFX 550W : http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1550sxxb...

What is the budget?

No budget, just looking for excellent value/bang for buck that is compatible with the components listed.

what do you think of MSI H87-G43 LGA 1150 Intel H87 Motherboard ... for $66 @ Frys.com?

What are the major differences between an H87 and a Z87 -- and which one would compliment my custom build the best?

I can get the H87 from Frys for $66, or the Z87 from Frys for $77.

Z87 is designed for overclocking computer components like the Graphics Card and CPU. H87 doesn't support overclocking.

Your cpu doesn't support overlcoking anyway

With the H87 would I still be able to overclock the GPU .. or is that locked/impossible?

gpu overclocking is independent. As long you have enough amps on the 12V rails on the psu you can overclock a gpu until it hits its limits.

Unless you're doing (heavy) video editing, multitasking or rendering then 8GB will be fine for now. For games (atm) there is no benefit to having 16GB of RAM unless you have a lot of stuff running in the background.

G Skill are one of the best, if not the best RAM manufacturers. You should aim for DDR3-1600mhz. Anything "faster" than that isn't noticeable, at least until DDR4 becomes mainstream.
