8Gb 1600Mhz Cl9 ram is enough for gaming:

this one is not expensive and is faster then 1600Mhz, though it won't make a difference in games it is good to have for other tasks.

8GB is more than enough for games. Most motherboards supports DDR3 ram, so buy the DDR3 module. For the speed i recommend at least 1600MHz. If you're going to buy 8GB, buy 2 sticks of 4GB [usually written like 8GB (2 X 4)]and run it in dual channel mode.

For what mobo and CPU? i.e. Haswell scales well to faster DRAM and can help in gaming, or with AMD, since they have weak MCs (comparatively speaking) the wier bandwidth of higher freq DRAM helps, also if running an APU with on-board graphices want higher freq DRAM to improve graphics :)
