transfer files from old laptop hd

I have a hd only from dell inspirion 6000 that I'm trying to retrieve pictures from. I purchased an adapter but laptop still won't let me view files. Am I missing something or did I purchase the wrong adapter

I bought a 2.0 2.5 ide pata hd external cover with a usb cord. How do I find out which hd I have. The hd does not fit well in the cover. The hd has 4 pins set aside the rest
