64bit os in properties, but program files x86

I just realized that my PC has an x86 program files which, if i am correct means that i am running a 32 bit operating system. But then I checked my system properties and it said that i was running a 64 bit OS. I would like to know whether I am running 32 or 64 bit as I would like to be able to use more than 4 GB of ram.

You have a program files folder which is for 64 bit software and a program files (x86) folder which would only show up on a 64 bit os. 32 bit just has a single program files folder. The folders are really just for organization though. Software will run 32 bit if that is what they were programmed as. Software can't be changed to another bit and there isn't any issues in running 32 bit software on a 64 bit os. There are still lots of software written in 32 bit and are coded so can't be easily rebuilt to 64 bit so they just stick to 32 bit which isn't much an issue if they really don't need to.
