I'm building my first computer, but I've run into a problem. My PSU came with two 6+2 pin connectors and one 8 pin connector, and my video card requires two 6 pin connectors. The PSU only has a port for a 6 pin connector. However, the CPU port on it is 8 pin. Can I connect my video card to the PSU via the CPU port?

Solution
The motherboard and CPU connectors are hardwired to your PSU, use those two cables for feeding the motherboard and CPU.

The CXM series is a weird one, corsair wired the port for the PCI-e modular cables such that it also works with the EPS 12V connector, you can put your string of 2 PCI-e connectors into that port and then connect them to your GPU, it will be fine, they already planned for it. I saw this with a 750M last week, its weird and rather confusing, and the CXM series is the only series you should assume it applies to.

I'm sort of lost. Is your psu semi modular? The 8 pin connector usually runs inside the psu with all the main wires like the 24pin connector. The 8 pin plugs into the motherboard and the 2 6 pins plus into the video card. And plus into the open 8pin slot on the back of the psu. If this is still not right link your psu and that should help us help you.

No! Don't do it! You will destroy the motherboard and PSU if you plug a 6+2 PCI-e connector into the 8 pin CPU power connector!

The PCI-e connector has 3 12V lines and 5 ground lines, the CPU power connector has 4 12V, and 4 ground, you will have a direct short between 12V and ground if you do that.

What power supply do you have? The CPU power connector should be identified as such and will be keyed differently, make sure you use that. Consult this site for reference if you need help telling them apart

It proabably won't fit.
PSU comes with x2 6+2 PCIe connectors.
GPU needs x2 6 pin connectors?
You want to connect GPU to CPU / CPU to GPU?
Either way, won't work / fit.
Is that right? Tell me the mos=del of your GPU and PSU. Then I may be able to help you more.

Would psu protect the motherboard or is the board definitely burnt? Yes i did the same thing :((

The smell comes from the psu. Im crossing my fingers :((
