I have recently downloaded the free version of avg's antivirus software from avg's site. I decided to try avg because xp is no longer supported and I presently am using microsoft essentials. However, I am having installation problems. Do I have to remove "essentials" before avg will install?

XP being supported no longer isn't mainly about the anti-virus software.

Microsoft actually finds exploits in the code and fixes them like a leaky dam. So XP is going to get progressively more prone to infection as hackers exploit this code and Microsoft no longer fixes the issues that pop up. A program like AVG can only do so much as well since they don't have full access to the Microsoft code.

I would suggest not doing anything critical like online banking or storing important data. I don't know exactly how much more risky it is though.

Windows 8 with a UEFI motherboard, when installed in Secure Mode (and good anti-virus suite) is the best protection Windows can provide.

Early reports and veiled threats of doom and destruction for XP users have so far failed to materialise and may never. AVG is a good AV but so is MSE and it's still being updated in XP systems.

Therefore, my take on this is turn off automatic updates in Control Panel and uninstall AVG. MSE will still be updated and a valuable tool because no-one fixes Microsoft security holes quite like Microsoft. MSE will always be free whereas AVG will always nag you to buy the latest version.

It's easy for posters to suggest "upgrade to Windows *" but the reality for a lot of folks is that the money simply isn't there. XP will continue to be a workable system as well as the system of choice for many users, including businesses.

Linux remains free, of course, and makes a secure home for XP to run in a Virtual machine.
