Would I Ever Need An Aftermarket CPU Cooler?

My CPU stays at around 20 degrees during normal use and climbs to mid-50s when gaming. Relatively frequently when the only thing I'm doing is listening to music and making word docs or PowerPoints the CPU stays around 14-15 degrees.

Should I ever invest into an aftermarket cooler like a Hyper 212 or Noctua NH-D14? Part of the reason I'm wondering would be the visual appeal (the standard Intel cooler is a pretty boring small fan) and also how well other coolers cool the CPU.

Solution
If your CPU is this: i5 3570, then you will not be able to overclock it, you could maybe increase the bus speed but nothing else as the multiplier is locked.
And I would recommend the hyper 212 evo as your are not going to overclock, its silent and performers very well.

Only if you want to overclock.
Overclocking is when you increase the clock speed of your CPU cores to make it run faster.
So unless yours is a FX range from amd or a K model from intel then you wont be able to do this.
P.S overclocking produces mass heat.
Hope this helps!

In addition, aftermarket coolers are a lot more silent.

If the computer you are considering this heatsink for is in your signature, you have a non-k i5 3570. So overclocking is out. However if when your CPU hits the 50's while gaming you find the stock Intel HSF fan getting annoyingly noisy, there is some argument to be made for going with a better heatsink.

Some people like their computers to be silent, if you're one of them, then an aftermarket heatsink is the way to go. As for which, you can't go wrong with the Hyper 212 EVO. Excellent price and very good performer.

I know what overclocking is. I've overclocked my GPU. I've heard overclocking my CPU is possible but I don't intend to do that. My computer gets a bit audible when I'm doing stuff so I was wondering if getting an aftermarket cooler would be worth the small investment.

Should I go with the Noctua or the Hyper 212 EVO?
