Issues with crashing following MSI R9 290 GPU and EVGA supernova NEX750B installation

Hi

I recently installed an EVGA supernova NEX750B PSU and MSI Radeon R9 209 4GB GPU.

When running 3D Mark Ice Storm test, my PC makes a strange whine, which I'm 80% sure is coming from the PSU. After 30 seconds or so of the test, my PC crashes and auto reboots.

I have also had this crash and reboot issue when running Skyrim in Eyefinity via skse_loader.exe. If I run Skyrim in the normal way I can get into the game, but I see odd multi colored pixilated trees in the distance (unsure if that details is in some way related).

I have also tried the furmark test a couple times, which also crashes as above when GPU gets to around 87c around 4 to 5 minutes into the test.
Current Specs:

MSI Radeon R9 209 4GB
EVGA NEX750B PSU
Intel Core i7-2600 3.4GHz
8GB RAM (brand unkown)
ASRock P67 Extereme4 Motherboard
CiT Vantage Midi Mesh Gaming Case
3x Acer S240HLbid 24'' Full HD widescreen LCD monitor with LED Backlight
W7 64 bit O/S

Any ideas on whats going wrong and how I can fix the problem?

Look at your psu manual. make sure you plug the power connectors that have separate 12V rails to the graphics card.
EVGA supernova NEX750B PSU is an average power supply. It is a multi-rail power supply as well so you have to take care in plugging PCIE to gpus so you don;t overload one of the rails.

So it looks like my PSU has 4 +12v rails, (+12V1, +12V2, +12V3, +12V4). I re connected as follows:

VGA2 (6 pin) from rail +12V2, to the GPU
VGA4 (6+2 pin) from rail + 12V4 to the GPU

I also took CPU1 off rail +12V3 and put it onto +12V1 with the 24 pin ATX for the MB, which meant that all SATA and PERP cables ran from rail +12V3 to the various fans and drives.

This is about as spread out as I could think to distribute connections between the rails.

When I ran 3d mark again, I was able to get through all 3 tests without a crash, however, I still got a lot of coil whine from the PSU or GPU (still convinced its the PSU), when running ICE STORM and CLOUD GATE, and a small amount when running FIRE STRIKE.

Is there anything else I could be doing to remove coil whine all together, or is this indicative of a faulty PSU, or even the wrong PSU?

As a further question/thought, is the coil whine related to the crashing issues I was experiencing? Or are these two separate issues that happened to hit me at the same time?

EDIT: I also switched vertical refresh to always be on in CC, not sure if this has an impact?

Are you sure that it is the power supply that is making the coil whine or is it the gpu?
Coil whine doesn't really mean it is a faulty unit.
You could go and RMA it but you could be rejected.
Another alternative is to live with the whine or buy another power supply.
Does it coil whine at idle or when in a game (not in a benchmark)?

Hi,

So far have only noticed the whine when running 3d Mark benchmark tests and Skyrim. Haven t had any whine running Furmark. I have tried several other games for short periods of time and not experienced the whine (Yet).

I cant be 100% sure its the PSU, even when I near enough stick my head in the case, I cant narrow the sound down specifically to one location, but always seems louder from the PSU end of the case.

Managed to get a reduction on the whine in Skyrim (which was worst on menu screens) by running RivaTunerStatisticsServer and locking the max frame rate to 60 FPS. Still get some whine in game where FPS is 30-40, however.
