Gaming PC shuts down unexpectedly (possibly PSU problem)

Hi

I built my PC recently, 6 months ago tops, for the first time. Only thing bothering me is that it restarts or just shuts down unexpectedly whilst gaming. (Yet another one of these problems, I know right.)

I have ruled out temperature problems. Highest temperature it went was just below 70C which I think is alright still and this is while gaming. But I'm not 100% sure this isn't the case.

I would say my settings are set to its optimal but what do I know. Anyway, I am thinking to get a new PSU as I think my system is under-powered. So before that, I need some reassurance that it is indeed the PSU problem.

I'll list the information I think is relevant to this issue.

HWMonitor

I don't know if the voltages are pretty obvious it's under-powered and the -5V line seems to be over. What happens when TMPIN2 reaches the maximum temperature? Because they do get neck to neck when the PC is under stress.

My list of components:

AMD FX 6300 3.50Ghz CPU Socket AM3+
Palit GeForce GT 640 2gb DDR3
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8gb ( 2x 4gb ) DDR3 1600mhz
Arctic Freezer 13 High Performance CPU Cooler
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Socket AM3+ FX DDR3 Onboard Graphics* Motherboard
500W Black Edition PSU 12cm Fan CE PFC Power Supply

All drivers and BIOS updated.
I've cleaned out all the vents, relocated my PC to a place with sufficient airflow and the thermal paste is relatively new.

Not sure if this is related, but my mouse has to be re-plugged to be usable after PC restarts itself.

I am more than happy to do any testing or provide any more information needed.
I'd be glad to receive any help provided.

Solution

The tool i gave is the same kind like hwmonitor but imo better.
It should give sensor readings like the picture in your op.
You could look with it if the voltages and temps for instance too are good and it will also keep the highest and lowest so you could look if something (voltages) went out of spec anyway.

You could also do the next with it,

You can open hwinfo32,after that open the sensor window, then click at the bottom "Logging start" ,after that choose a name and place for the log.like Hwinfolog at your desktop.Leave it open and do game/stresstest or...

Vic,

Thanks for the reply. Right. In the bios, the voltages are the right voltages ie. the 1.5V line is 1.5V with Core being 1.32V. The rest are 11.808V and 3.377V for 12V and 3.3V.

For the RAM,
It's at 1.6MHz.

I've not changed anything from it's default.

I ran a series of sensors tests from the software you gave me with results of my PC restarting and not.

What do I need to look at? Or should I just put the files here?

Thanks

I only need a mid range graphics card for the type of games I play. As far as I know this is a mid-high range card.

After the restart upload the log to a site without to much crap (!),for instance http://www.zippyshare.com/ , and leave a link to it here. You could also look at the log yourself with either excel or libre office calc.

The gt 640 isn't really a mid range card, for that would you look at the r9 270(x)/gtx660 and maybe the ones just above these, but if you have fun with that card and can play what you want is that the most important.

Yeah it is better! I went through the logging bit and got pretty much all the data I need, with only once I ran for 4 hours of gaming without restarting and the other 3 times it restarted. I'll put a link with the best data imo collected.

http://www65.zippyshare.com/v/256209/file.html

I looked through and couldn't find anything fishy with my PC. The voltages are the same throughout, the temperature looks ok to me.

So again, I do not know what's causing the restart. Does the constant voltage supply rule the power supply issue out?

Could the graphics card be causing this? I do hear a buzz coming out of it at times which starts whenever I start a game and that just started few days ago but the PC auto restarts a long time ago.

I do appreciate all the help you can give. :)

With that log,did it restart?

The +12voltrail is imo quite low going to 11.52V wich is within atx specs, but also goes up to 11.952V which gives quite a fluctuation.
It's also difficult seeing that the 5voltrail isn't in there. With the +12volt readings would i not trust the psu,but like i said are the values within spec, but very low.

I couldn't find anything else, the temps were quite low too so did you stresstest with this log? Furmark or one of the unigine benchmarks for the gpu (the valley benchmark for instance) or prime95,intelburntest for the cpu..

Yeah that one restarted. I do think it is the PSU though.. But let's continue with the stress tests and see what I get.

I've ran prime95 blend for 12 hours now and nothing seems to happen, yet. Will continue to run it for 18 or 24 hours then after this, it nothing happens, I'll run Furmark.

Oh I wish it's an XFX! It's an ATX-500B. Looks pretty generic and maybe a little dodgy to me. I shouldn't have overlooked at PSUs when selecting my components. =/
