BTW, the Toshiba product is called the 'Canvio Wireless Adapter'.

For a few bucks below $50 at most places, it allows network connectivity to up to 8 devices in a compact travel friendly package. I personally think it is a great deal, as you can use it with any external drive you want to, AND is compact.

The Buffalo router costs about $60 at most places, and is much larger, but comes is a full out 600 Mbps + 4 gigabit ethernet router.

I use polkast to allow mobile devices to access my 2 internal 2TB HDD's. You download and install the software onto your computer with the HDD you want to be shared. Then simply set what folders you want to be accessible. The downfall is that you cannot use polkast for computer to computer transfers.

If you have an external HDD, then you can simply plug it into your computer and go under settings/manage access, and set the whole drive to be shared on polkast. It really is a wonderful program.

Thank you for your reply, I have looked at polkast and think it will be useful. But I would like to be able to access by ext hdd when the computer is switched off. I think I will require a hardware solution. I have just been playing with polkast I must agree with you a wonderful program:)

There is a toshiba product exactly for that purpose. I forgot what it was called but you can find it easily on their website.

Buying a router with USB connectivity also works. Buffalo for example, makes a router that they market next to their external drives.
