I'm designing my first gaming PC and am getting the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 graphics card. I will be running my pc off of a 42inch hdtv. I also never plan to use multiple monitors. Will I ever need to worry about buying a 2nd card and running SLI or should I be fine with the one?

One 780 will work just fine for you. If you ever got a high refresh rate monitor 120hz or above, then I would suggest a 780 ti. Since you plan of sticking with one display @60hz for the foreseeable future then a single 780 will get the job done. If in the next few years a single 780 doesn’t play the new games the price should have dropped enough that you can get a second card for cheap. I cannot tell the future so I cannot say as a fact, but I think a single 780 @1080p @60hz will be enough for at least a couple of years.
