Hey,

I've been given the task of building a server. The budget is up to £1000 but preferably a little less. Do I need any specialist software for this build? And what parts would you recommend? I have build a PC before (thanks to tomshardware member tips) so, the building of the server should be ok.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have a good evening.

with a home server you can install windows server or free lynix software if you want. low end home server would use standard 1150 or 2011 mb.and a few drives. higher end would use a server mb. if you buy a tower case they do sell hot swap drive bays for 5.25 outside bays.
they also sell server case that fit in raid frames.

bolt it to a desk or a frame. most people use a intel h mb with 6 sata ports. they use a ssd (120g) on one of the 6g ports and use 4 2g drives for the raid on the sata 3g ports. depending on your raid set up. will be the number of drives you need.
some raid need 5 drives to make a raid set...

some raid need 5 drives to make a raid set up as they put the data across more then one drive.
