Does motherboard really affect performance?

I have a question. I have a i7 4770, and will it theoretically run better on a $300 z87 board than a $50 b85 board? I mean, apart from the BIOS features and the ability to overclock, does chipset really affect the CPUs performance? What about video cards?
The $50 and the $300 board both have a PCI e 3.0 x16 slot, so if you're not running multi GPU, will the performance be the same? What does a more expensive board give you? better VRM? more features? what else?
I will not overclock or run multi GPU, so do I need a high end board?

Solution
For a 4770 is a B85,a H87 or even a cheap z87 board good enough.It all depends on price.
For chipset differences read,
http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Z87-H87-H81-Q87-Q85-B85-What-is-the-difference-473/
it's about having raid options or not, more sata 3 ports, supporting higher speed ram = >1600mhz etc.
For the raw speed of the cpu should it not make a difference.Higher speed ram can make a little difference.

Well the expensive motherboards are better for overclocking, bios features, some of them even speed up USB transfer rate for example the Z87 motherboards can speed up the USB transfer rate but only on an USB 3.0 170% faster to be precise the Z87 also protects your other components so if lightning strikes it will fry but keep the other parts safe from dmg here i am telling you about the Asus Z87-k, well other stuff is that the more expensive motherboards support higher frequency RAM, some motherboards support both SLI and Crossfire other only 1 of them, the more expensive motherboards also have a better sound card but you should be precise about which motherboard are we talking about

The guy on the video is comparing 2 z87 boards and the question here is 2 diffirent chipsets the b85 and the z87

Oh, I misunderstood what he meant by chipset (though it's obvious, I don't know what I was thinking).

The better chipset wont affect the performance but consider this if you buy that B85 board in the future you cant possibly overclock and you get lower quality audio but if you get a cheap z87 motherboard for example the Asus Z87-K which costs about $100 you will have an overclock option for the future and better quality audio

I have no desire to overclock. I just want to be able to run my GPU effectively without being limited by the motherboard.

Unless he forgot the "k" bit in "7 4770", he can't overclock.

Well if you re running multiple GPUs you will need a better chipset to get better performance if you will have only 1 GPU you could go with the older chipset and if you dont have a k at the end of the CPU you cant overclock
