Concerned about older CPU and new GPU

I built a new rig in late 2011 and have not upgraded since. I'm interested in upgrading the GPU mainly, from a 6970 HD to a more modern AMD card. I currently have an i5-2500k Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) , OC'd a little bit but nothing substantial. I plan on purchasing an R9 280x most likely.

So my question is, will I not get the most out of the 280x because of the 2011 CPU? Is it worth upgrading the GPU alone or should I look at a larger overhaul?

Thanks.

No worries at all, the 2500K, especially overclocked is still a beast which performs on par with the latest i5s and will not bottleneck even a GTX 780 Ti

Go ahead and get that 280x, you still have a fair bit of overclocking and upgrading headroom, no need to upgrade that CPU unless you want better performance in video editing and rendering in which you'd want an i7, otherwise that i5 will last you a few more years
