In pure compute performance i hear that AMD wins with their graphics cards but in gaming NVIDIA wins in pure power, I'm playing on doing video editing and rendering and so forth for being a youtube and for school work, I'm trying to make a choice between the XFX R9 290X for $500.33 or the Gigabyte GTX 780 Ti Ghz for $725 and i was wondering if the AMD ATI would actually make a different in what I'm doing. I chose those 2 as if I'm going cheap I'm going the cheapest but if I'm going the best I'm getting the best i can, thanks :)

For what you're doing a CPU will be what you need most, as far as GPU work, does the software you're using utilize CUDA or openCL?

Lol your going the cheapest but plan on buying very high end cards. GTX 780ti some say is the best single card you can purchase, the R9 290X wether it's reference or non-reference runs very hot (85-95C region) so take that into account. Like maxiim said your CPU will be doing most of the work, for example in after effects the GPU isn't utilized but in Sony Vegas Pro the GPU is used to decrease render speeds regardless of it being AMD or Nvidia.

I'm not sure where you heard AMD wins this and Nvidia wins that, it really comes down to your personal preference. I on one hand like Nvidia because of their drivers, their Geforce Experience comes with features like in-game recording and best game settings and so on. when I had AMD I was never presented with any of these features, just the basics. This is just my preference though.

i personally like NVIDIA too I'm not a fanboy i do suggest AMD do friends i am building a friend a PC with a R9 280X and an FX 8350 because thats as much performance as he can get and he wants to do some kind of youtube work, but i like NVIDIA for the look of their cards the fact that they run quieter their drivers are very nice as i have not seen many problems with them at all and overall NVIDIA seems to be more powerful in gaming, but not all is bad about AMD but as you have said about winning neither really does that so now that you said that i reckon ill go the NVIDIA side as i prefer NVIDIA, thanks

Glad you made the choice the GTX 780ti will do you nicely. However Gigabyte seemed to have gone wrong with the 780ti and messed up. I have a gigabyte gtx 770 myself and it's amazing but it seems they didn't do so well with the 780ti. Some are saying it came as a dud and others are saying is excellent so it's a matter of choice.

Saying this, I'm not saying you shouldn't get the Gigabyte gtx 780ti it's just something to let you know. Gigabyte make great cards imo, if you are worried however EVGA and MSI has got you covered.

Yeah I'm aware but I'm sure gigabyte will pull through anyway they have one of the best i found the Ghz is cheaper than the OC and its got a darker black metal (i like that :D ) and a nice back plate the card is made up of the highest end samsung parts and its also cheaper than almost all other card makers so they offer a great deal, but that could be the 1/10 who get the bad one of the batch it could also be they don't have the right parts to suit the card so I'm confident it will work, thanks for the help thought :)
