Hello everyone,

I have a problem that is buzzing me for about a year, as mentioned in the title my laptop won't shut down thoroghly. When i shut dowm my laptop through the start menu(Windows) i will shut down the windows, but the laptop will remain in an active state with the status let turned on.

I have an Acer Aspire 5560 which runs on windows 8.1 Pro. Also i need to mention that this didn't happen when i bought it(2 year ago).

I have tried a lot of things from reinstalling the windows, changing the windows with another version( orginally this happened while i was running windows 8), i also tried removing the BIOS Battery and reinserting it. Still the same issue.

Is this a software issue or a hardware issue and if so which part of the hardware migh have a problem that causes this to happen ?

Thanks a lot for you help,
Eddy.

There are actually two possibilities.

1. Some program that you installed is holding up the shut down process.

OR

2. Your hard drive is slowly failing.
In case of the former, remove unwanted free software.
I too am having the same problem with my Lenovo Z500, I've found that my hard drive is at fault. I'm going to get it replaced.
You can check out the make of your hard drive, go to it's manufacturer's website and get a tool for checking the status of drive.
If there is a problem, get your hard drive replaced.

I don't think that there are any software that keeps my laptop from shutting down, i say this cause i have reinstalled the Windows a few days ago( no more than 3). And as far as the HDD failure, i have a new SSD drive i just mounted along with the new Windows installation.

I need to mention again that the Windows is shutting down but the laptop will stay in an active state( the status led remains on), first i thought it will remain on to cool itseft as long as the motherboard cooler is still active, but as i said i took off the BIOS battery which should resest all the settings to their basic ones.

If it's not the hard drive or any software; it might just be your copy of Windows.

Is your copy of Windows 8.1 genuine??? Did you happen to come across any dialogue box about installing any VPN software???
