You have a very long way to go. That is like asking what a airplane is and how you fly it. I would advise you call the phone company and ask them for help. They generally will sell these systems as part of a package. You can then learn over time how to use them.
PBX == Private Business eXchange. You get several phone lines from your Telco, connect them to PBX "outside" lines (called "trunk"), and connect your phones to PBX "inside" lines (extensions). If you are talking for anything more than a handful of extensions, and more than one trunk line - hire a contractor who specializes in that.
