Hard drives getting REALLY hot, but SMART says no errors...?

I have a couple of hard drive hot-swap bays in my home computer; in the past I only used one drive in them at a time, but recently I put two drives in and copied between them. One drive is a recent model Western Digital Black 4tb model, and the others are older (2008 era) HGST (Hitachi, now WD) drives.

What I noticed was that the drive bays I'm using are cooled sufficiently (they have the drive in a metal box with a small fan in the back), and that the drives were getting VERY hot... like "Ow, this is too hot to hold in my hand!" hot. So hot that I can't imagine the drives not having been harmed by it.

However, when I've taken a look at the SMART numbers on the drives, there are no errors posted; everything is normal, all important measures are listed as OK.

Besides the fact that I need to swap these drive bays for ones that have better airflow, what I wonder is if I've put them at serious risk for data loss/failure due to them having been exposed to this much heat. After I noticed this happening, I made sure to remove drives promptly after being used. Sadly, before that, some of these drives have been running for a day or so, presumably at these temperatures.

How can this kind of heat be happening, but SMART says the drives haven't had any significant errors? Any ideas?
