Hello tomshardware forum members,

My old rig's Gainward GeForce® GTX 460 2GB "GS" video card died, so I'm looking at a
MSI N660 Gaming 2GD5/OC to replace it. But when I searched the internet, the answers are divided if the cx500 psu will be enough.

The rig:
Intel Core Quad 6600 (overclocked to 3.0GHz and FSB 1333 at 1.4V) + coolermaster hyper evo 212 cooler
ASUS P5B motherboard
8GB Corsair DDR2-800
Gainward GeForce® GTX 460 2GB "GS" (died)
Corsair CX500 PSU
Samsung 250GB EVO SSD
3 500GB HDD
2 DVD/1 floppy/1 memorycardslotsthing
A lot of fans in the case (Antec DF 85)

I know the mobo/cpu/ram is old, but I'm not upgrading it yet because it does the job (it doesn't max out in games) and it's not a good time. I ultimately want to buy a whole new rig, but this one will have to do the trick for a year or so until I have the opportunity and the resources.

I game alot and run BOINC (so a gtx660 has enough power, but is still in the budget - around € 160). I also develop programs, but I don't think that's a major performance factor.

The CX500 managed the gtx 460 and benchmarks show that the gtx 660 has a lower power consumption, so i think it should be fine but wanted to check with you guys to be sure.

So what are your opinions?

Yes you are safe to go with that GPU. It consumes around 173 W on load 21W more than 460. To come to an end yes you can buy it. Also your screen resolution , games u play , any condition wanted like high quality or ultra or anything else ?

I play on a 1920*1080 screen with a extra 1024*720 screen for keeping an eye on mail etc...
I'd like to play as high as possible, but am aware that the ability of my system is limited. As long as I can play Dayz SA, Plannetary Annahilation, Planetside 2 with decent graphics and framerate, it's ok.

I do use BOINC (comparable with bitcoin mining, but for scientific research purposes) for long periods of time on full load, also using CUDA.

So I shouldn't worry about blowing up my system :p  with all that in the rig and the gtx660?

Well the Cx500 aint as great as they say.I had it for a few days and didnt like it even a bit.But according to most of the benchmarks running on the internet it should be enough.

I would surely go on for it. But strongly suggest to buy a new rig.Or at least save money for a new one.

Well if I could sell the PSU I have now for about €55, then I could upgrade without spending much more. I was thinking about this one: SeaSonic M12II EVO 620 Bronze

Great choice Seasonic is a beast. But keep in mind that you would need a new RIG.

Best of luck !

Allright, I'll do that then.

Yeah I know :p , but I'm now in the last few months of my studies. I expect to have a job and income within 6 months or so and then I'll have the resources to buy a new rig and use this one as a home server.

Thanks alot for the info! It really helped me alot :)
