SEAGATE USB to SATA problems in identifying other HDDs

Hi All!

I recently opened up a Seagate Expansion 4TB USB 3 3.5" so I could use as a USB to SATA USB 3.0 adapter, because I desperately need to access information on another hard drive, but the case is, he IS identifying the HD's, but it tells me it's not "readable", and only gives me the chance to format it, but I can't lose a single bit.

I've done some research and found out it may be a problem in the partition scheme, but I have no real clue what may be causing it. I'll put up some things I found out:

I tested 2 HD's and both have the same problem.

using gdisk, he is telling me the working HD has MBR protective and is using GPT scheme, but both HD"s that aren't working have protective MBR and NO GPT was found.

I tough of using gdisk to change this HD to GPT, but I am kind of afraid, as the program tells me there is a lot of free space (maybe due to protective MBR, but I don't know much about it, just the basics):

Command (? for help): v

No problems found. 976754634 free sectors (3.6 TiB) available in 1
segments, the largest of which is 976754634 (3.6 TiB) in size.

Also, gdisk haven't found any partition either:

Command (? for help): p
Disk /dev/disk1: 976754645 sectors, 3.6 TiB
Logical sector size: 4096 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): 0EC5BA42-3A76-421A-801B-B6929E0E5E17
Partition table holds up to 128 entries
First usable sector is 6, last usable sector is 976754639
Partitions will be aligned on 256-sector boundaries
Total free space is 976754634 sectors (3.6 TiB)

Number Start (sector) End (sector) Size Code Name

when i "Print Protective MBR Data", this comes out:

Expert command (? for help): o

Disk size is 976754645 sectors (3.6 TiB)
MBR disk identifier: 0x00000000
MBR partitions:

Number Boot Start Sector End Sector Status Code
1 1 976754644 primary 0xEE

I've done a lot of research on many things, and the only thing i found is that people using the HD's inside Expansion must convert partition table to GPT, because they are MBR partitioned, but that's not true in my case, gdisk is saying that the Expansion disk is using GPT and the others are all MBR.

the chipset ASMedia 1053.

Thanks a lot, I really need this done. I have no money to buy a proper dock and I have a bunch of work to do with the drives.

Forgot to mention, I am using Mac OS 10.9.2 on a MacBook Pro Retina

Seagate's 3TB enclosures are configured with 4KB sector sizes, not the standard 512-byte sectors.

You need to repartition and reformat your drive inside the enclosure using Seagate's DiscWizard tool (an OEM version of Acronis True Image).

As you seem to already know, Seagate does something funky in the firmware of their sata-usb board to get the drives to work the way they want them to; so you don't have a lot of choices. Either borrow or by a compatible dock type device but please be aware that not all of them are 3 & 4tb compatible.

Actually, that was not the answer, how do I undo it?

My other drives are also 4096 byte sectors, so maybe that's not the problem..

This Funky thing cannot be bypassed? or reprogrammed? What exactly is the Funky thing? I have read that the first model works well with other drives.
