Windows 7 lost connection

It is a Dell lap top, Has had internet since last fall. It has been on wireless from my DSL account on daughter's computer. I opened my windows 7 computer as same as usual and 'Boom', no internet connection. I could not get it back on line, worked all day yesterday trying to find a way, even did a restore. It is still not on line. I can not down load anything for it even on my eight.1 laptop, they keep saying the computer that I am on is a 8.1. I tell them it is for a windows 7 and they seem to not understand. I have unplug the modem several times still nothing helps.Could this be a new virus? Oh I ran all my anti virus & anti-maleware program,still it is nothing..
