Hi.
I have been wanting to upgrade my computer, to make it perform better when gaming.
My motherboard is an Intel DX58SO, and my processor is an, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz.

Now I'm not very familiar with what is good and what to look for. If it makes any difference as to what type of motherboard I am looking for, my Graphic Card is an AMD Radeon 270x.

I have been told that I should maybe look for a AMD chip, but if there are any specific suggestions, it would be great.
Thank you very much in advance :)

this is the most future proof you could go, it has a z97 board which will last through broadwell and likely skylake. or, if you wont need to upgrade for a while, then this will be just about as fast for a bit cheaper

Okay, but if i were to only upgrade the processor, would that make my gaming smoother? And in the case where it's only the processor needed to be upgraded, what processor should I look at, same budget.

Hyperthreading won't do anything for gaming. The i7 4770k is maybe 5% better than the i5 4670k for gaming. It's not worth the extra cost.

To bump this thread and ask a new question rather than making a new thread, I fell over the Asus MSI Z97 motherboards, espeacially the Z97M.
What sort of processor would fit that motherboard? And is it any good?

I believe you could use any 1150 Intel processor, but they are specifically made for the new devil's canyon and broadwell CPUs. I'd say they are very good, ASUS makes great boards (arguably the best on the market, and last I checked they had the lowest failure rate too, but that may have changed.) If I were in your position, I'd probably get one of those and a devil's canyon chip when it comes out. I don't think it's worth it to wait for broadwell, because they won't be here until late this year or early next, and from what I've seen they're going for more efficiency and better integrated graphics over pure performance, plus they'll be way more expensive.
