My windows 8 pc has been crashing to a coloured screen recently, it is then unresponsive and requires a hard reset. I think this may be a windows issue as it hasn't happened on my linux partition (although I have not fully tested this as I'm not sure how, on windows it crashes mostly when attempting playing games but I don't have any games on linux)

It seems to crash when trying a new activity, such as opening a new program or loading to windows desktop. Once it happens once, it happens a few more times when trying to start windows (after the hard reset), at this stage it shows a black screen after the windows symbol and again requires a hard reset until it shows a windows error and gives me the option to restart on-screen.

I do not think this is due to overheating as I have quite a powerful machine and used to be able to run more than this (playing rome total war 2 on one screen and watching videos on second screen). This problem first came when playing dota2, trying to switch the webpage on my second screen if this helps, before this I had no problems.

Windows also says "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" sometimes. I have nvidia geforce experience installed and have fully updated drivers. I am currently using the beta drivers but it's still crashing (I was originally on normal drivers but it was still crashing, I also reverted the drivers but that didn't help.

Attempted fixes:
Uninstalled/Updated graphics drivers
Updated windows
Ran CCleaner to scan for registry issues/fixed them

Edit 1:
System:
EVGA gefocre GTX 660
Corsair TX570V2 entusiast series 750w
Asrock Z77 extreme4 motherboard
Intel i5-3570k

Hello,

I was about to install these but now my PC won't start up, it just turns on, the fans spin for a few seconds then it turns off and repeats this. The motherboard setting/choose partition bit doesn't even show. Should I remove my graphics card or is there anything else I should try at this stage?
