Hey guys I was wondering if you could tell me if this would work or not:
My HDD is crashing on my laptop, but through a linux livecd I was able to retrieve any files I needed. I've got a new SSD coming in the mail, and was wondering if it would be possible to install a clean version of windows 7 on the new disc using the product key on the underside of my laptop?

I've followed instructions from lifehacker to download a vanilla version of Windows 7 for a clean install. The thing is, though, these directions were inferring that you would be using the same HDD. I'm not sure what PC components the Windows Activation looks for, so I was wondering if anyone knew if this would work correctly if I proceed to attempt this, or if it would be a waste of time?

Thanks in advance!

It's an Asus and it has a "Recovery Partition." So I'm not sure if Asus puts the entire install on the partition, or if it's compressed in some way. I'm unable to look at it right now, but when I get home I'll look around and see if the windows install is on there. Thanks for the idea!

So I checked the recovery partition and it seems to be just asus proprietary programs and compressed data.

I'm still waiting for the SSD to come in, but in the meantime I was able to successfully activate an iso of Windows 7 (OEM) with the key on the laptop's underside.

When the SSD comes in, I'll report back the answer to my original question, in case anyone stumbles upon it while googling.

In case anybody stumbles onto this, then Yes it is possible to perform a clean Win7 install on a new SSD using the OEM license. It allowed me to activate it without any problems.
Just a word of caution: make sure you get a OEM version of the OS, as the retail version will likely have trouble activating.
