Built a new PC the other day and ran into problems very quickly. Here are the specs:

  • Windows 8.1
    Intel Core i5 4440 CPU
    ASUS H81M-K motherboard
    MSI GTX 760 (N760 2GD5/OC, factory overclocked)
    Corsair VS550 PSU (550 wt, 42A on 12V)
    WD10EZEX HDD

Here's the problem: the rig passes all benchmarks well. Heaven for 40 minutes? No problem. Valley? Serve it hot. FurMark? Bitch, please. Also, memtest and passmark, it passed them, too. Looks solid!

But in games, it plays for a bit (a few minutes), then locks up and either freezes for a few minutes and then goes on, crashes to desktop or goes into BSOD (last is rare, gives the CRITICAL PROCESS DIED or KERNEL INPAGE ERROR; doesn't make any dumps). Not all games. So far, I've ran into problems with Crysis 2, CS:GO, some problems with SimCity (2013). However, Starcraft II, Dishonored, DXHR seem fine, played them for a good deal of time with no issues.
The odd thing! I've noticed Crysis 2 locks up at the exact same point - when you enter the New York with an empty pistol and fire up an augmented reality visor for the first time. Could be the software issue, perhaps?

I thought its the GPU issue, but the warranty dpt where I purchased the GPU ran tests for a few days and they claim its perfectly functional. You know what? I'm inclined to agree with them. I played Starcraft 2 for hours at ultra, as well as Dishonored and its all good. But I can't for the life of me put my finger on the problem.

I've tried:

  • Reinstalling Windows 8.1
Older, fresh and beta drivers (clean installs!)
    Testing with internal GPU
Removing and inserting the GPU back
    Reinserting the ram
Praying to Gaben at the dawn and dusk
I really need some help, guys, I've ran myself into a wall trying to fix it.

Update!

To souls in peril, I have managed to solve the problem. It turns out the incompatibility was caused by my onboard sound. I went into UEFI and disabled the onboard sound, effectively solving the issues.
